Let him go, so he can grow

These are pictures of a food plot that we planted on May 1, 2006. This plot contains Sorghum, Red Clay Peas, Austrian Winter Peas and a variety of other peas, Alfalfa, Chicory and Imperial Whitetail Clover. The Alfalfa mixture is by Imperial Whitetail called Alfa-Rack. The Peas and Sorghum are by Pennington Seed, purchased from Seedland Seed Company. This plot was fertilized with 600 lbs. per acre of 19-19-19. As you can see, it has done well. The reason for this type of food plot in Craig County is, we sometimes have somewhat harsh Winter seasons. The sorghum will last all winter long for the most part. As Spring begins, the Alfalfa and Clover should have a good root system and flourish.
Here we have a six pointer on the left and an eight pointer on the right. The eight pointer as you can see has a small rack. What is normally referred to as a basket rack as opposed to the six pointer who has a rack scoring around 140 Boone and Crockett. This is the type of buck you want to let grow. He was around 2-1/2 years old, but as you can see his body was well out performing his rack size. His weight was about 154 lbs. This is typically what we are trying to change in the herd; getting the body and the antler size to become closer in conformation. The eight pointer, with age, may have become more of what we are looking for. By this age you can basically tell what he is going to be at a later age. The six pointer, which was taken on November 19, 2005 (eight years later), is much more of a match as far as body and antler size. He was 200 lbs. dressed weight and was around 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 years old. Quite a difference!
