Craig Co., Virginia Deer Management Program
Let him go, so he can grow
Photos
This is a picture of our first food plot that was planted with beans & peas
for the Summer season. Several hard frosts have killed the beans, peas and natural forage.
Now, it is starting to grow with Rye, which re-seeded itself
from previous Rye that had been mowed off in the Spring of 2006.
This saves in the cost of re-seeding.
Next Spring, we will till this back up and reseed with Sorghum.
We won’t skimp on fertilizer either. . . it will get a shot of 19-19-19 @ 600lbs per acre.
Next Fall we will have a soil sample done. This process aids in building soil
that was otherwise in somewhat poor condition and
if we decide to put this plot back in pasture or hay, the soil will be
in better shape than it was before we started.
The benefit is two-fold. . . .
you are feeding deer & other wildlife AND adding nutrients back into the soil.
A definite win-win combination!
These signs are obtainable through the Quality Deer Management Association web site.
Membership is not required to order these signs but I would encourage all who are practicing
quality deer management to purchase a few of these signs and to join the association
and start receiving the “Quality Whitetails” magazine.
This magazine contains the best information on deer management I have ever seen.
By placing the signs around your property boundaries, you not only discourage poachers
from entering your land, you also inform them of how serious you are
about herd management.
To order the signs, log on to:
www.qdma.com
go to the posters & signs section and place your order.
These signs get people talking!
Over the past year, I have heard people talking about the signs on our land
and the fact that they know that I am serious about game laws & poachers.

Quite a few hunters (including myself), carry their cell phones with them on the hunt.
The local Sheriff’s Office number as well as several of the Game Warden’s phone numbers
are
at-the-ready for immediate contact if & when needed by myself.
Most game officials are very helpful and are happy to help
with poachers & game transgressors.
So, a word of advice to those thinking of breaking the law:
Now, more than ever, you are being watched by more people than you know.
Within moments of a violation, chances are you will be in the grasp
of local and or state law officials.
We encourage you to THINK TWICE before you commit the crime.
