Let him go, so he can grow
Trail Camera Photos
PICTURE 001
The buck in this picture is an eight pointer with an impressive rack for a two year old.
Notice his neck at the base and how it attaches to his body.
It is a little more squared and straighter with his brisket than the five pointer (Picture 002).
To my knowledge, the eight pointer has never been seen again
since this picture was taken on July 27, 2005.
PICTURE 004
This is the best I have seen the five pointer (picture 002) one year later.
You can see how he has matured along with the change in his antler growth.
Notice his neck conformation next to his body as compared to the eight pointer (picture 001).
This tells me he is two years old, as was the eight pointer (picture 001) the year before.
This deer (picture 004) was passed up three times this year with plenty of chances
for the hunter to get a clean harvest on him, but he is still walking due
to good hunting practices, sound judgement and good management practices.
Lets see what he becomes next year.
Since he has been around for about two years he may just hang around
and turn out to be a good buck to spread his genes through the herd.
We'll watch him grow.
PICTURE 003
This picture was taken on June 19, 2005.
Notice the bases on his antlers. Probably at least 6" in circumference.
Usually new antler growth begins around the first of May.
With that in mind, this buck's antlers are most impressive
for not much more than a months growth.
Chances are this deer is at least 4 years old.
Here you can see the difference when we let the little guys walk.
You can also see how age, genetics & proper nutrition play a role in herd management.
If you want a deer for meat, take a doe during doe season
and leave the little bucks to grow into mature bucks.
This year we let a total of 14 little ones walk.
Someday, if left to grow, they will be most impressive.
Let’em go so they can grow!
PICTURE 002
This five point buck's picture was taken on September 13 2005.
Notice how his neck is somewhat skinnier than the eight pointer (Picture 001).
However for a 1-1/2 year old deer, he is pretty impressive for his age
and will someday be an impressive buck if he makes it to 5-1/2 years old.
However, the eight pointer (Picture 001) genetically
is a much better buck for 2 1/2 years old.
